This lesson culminates the week by incorporating the previous input. It contains a review of all material and whole class interaction in a guided talk show role play.

Lesson Plan 5 – TV Advice Show

Topic: Health

Target Learners: High Intermediate Adults

Language Focus: Discourse Competence, Oral Presentation

Primary Skills: Speaking and Listening

Secondary Skills: Reading and Vocabulary Use

Methodology: Communicative Language Teaching

Assessment: 1) Teacher feedback on language use, pronunciation, vocabulary.

2) Teacher/peer feedback on listening and comprehension.

Teaching Aids and Materials: Handout, Role Play Cards, Chalk board.

Instructions below are based on a class size of twenty.

Stages of Lesson

 

-Opening: (10 minutes) Quiz – review of previous lesson’s vocabulary and vocabulary use.

-Focusing (3 minutes) T will model the role-play by describing an illness and asking for advice. (ex.) T can explain that she/he burned her hand while cooking yesterday and ask the class what they would done for a small burn. T should use the same descriptive features as found on the role play cards.

-Introduction (5 minutes) T will play the role of director/host for the TV program, handing out role-play and prompting students to prepare for their speaking parts. T can also read the instructions on the role play cards. Copy one sheet for each student in a group of four.

-Group work (10 minutes) Ss discuss their health issue as described on role-play card.

-Role-play (15 minutes) Ss come together as a class. T will continue the role-play as the host of the show calling on audience members to present their health concern and ask for advice.

-Teacher evaluation (5 minutes) Wrap up the show and thank the audience for their participation.

Role Play

You and your group are members of a TV show audience, Call the Doctor, where health practitioners give advice for healthy living. You will be called upon to share recent health concerns during today’s show. Be prepared to describe your problem to the other audience members.

Who you are …

Your group will play the role of Jennifer. You have hurt your ankle running for the bus. You think it is a little swollen. You took a painkiller, but your ankle still hurts.

Your health concern …

  • -your ankle is swollen
  • -your ankle is sore
  • -your ankle hurts when you try to walk
  • -you took aspirin, but it did not help

What you must do …

  1. Prepare to describe your problem.
